Beware Of Tax Scam Targeting Residents, Holmdel Officials Warn

The township is warning residents of a new scam where texts or callers pretend to be from the Division of Taxation. See details:

HOLMDEL, NJ — Holmdel Township officials are warning of a new tax scam targeting residents.

In an online post, Mayor Brian Foster and the Township Committee said scammers are calling and sending texts pretending to be from the Division of Taxation.

In these messages, scammers ask residents for private information to "help" with Senior Freeze, Stay NJ, or ANCHOR applications, officials said.

According to the township, the IRS and NJ Division of Taxation will never:

  • Contact you by text message
  • Ask you to make a payment via a link in a text
  • Ask for personal information such as your bank account or Social Security number via text or phone call

If you receive a questionable message claiming to be from the IRS or Division of Taxation, officials are urging residents to stay vigilant and not provide any private details.

The recommended course of action is to independently search for their official customer service number on the IRS website or the NJ Division of Taxation website, or call these agencies directly to verify.
