Driver Charged With DWI, 'Seriously Injured' In Crash On Holmdel Road: Police

The accident occurred Tuesday evening when the vehicle crossed into the northbound lane, left the road and struck a tree, police said.

HOLMDEL, NJ — A local man sustained serious injuries and has been charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) following a motor vehicle crash on Tuesday evening, Holmdel Police said.

George Vellios, 56, of Holmdel, was charged with DWI, reckless driving, consumption of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle, and possession of an open/unsealed alcoholic beverage container in a motor vehicle, police said.

Around 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Patrolman Joseph Disko came across the accident on Holmdel Road near Longview Drive while on routine patrol.

A preliminary investigation found that a 2021 Jeep, operated by Vellios, was traveling south on Holmdel Road when it crossed into the northbound lane, left the road and struck a tree, police said.

Vellios sustained serious injuries from the crash and required extrication from the vehicle by the Holmdel Fire Department. He was then brought to Jersey Shore Medical Center by Monmouth County Sheriff EMS – Medstar.

Holmdel Road was closed for approximately two hours following the crash, which police said resulted in “significant traffic delays.”
