WATCH: Hazlet PD Performs Water Rescue Amid Ida Storm

HAZLET, NJ — Over 50 calls for help reached the Hazlet Police Department, while water from storm Ida was pouring down and flooding streets and homes in town. One of those rescues was captured by a township resident.

The 30-second clip shows a car submerged in waist-high water and a first responder helping someone out of the vehicle and out of the flooded area.

"This was one of the many vehicles that had driven into waist-high floodwaters last night and fortunately our officers were able to get them to safety," said the caption on the video shared by the Hazlet Township Police Department.

Of the calls that came in during the storm, between the hours of 6 p.m. on Wednesday and 6 a.m. on Thursday, 22 were to assist drivers and seven were for a water rescue.

First responders managed to get everyone that got trapped by waters while driving out safely without injuries.

Two homes on Craig Street also had to be evacuated, according to the Hazlet Township Police Department.

Across the town, many roads were impassable during the storm and parts of both State Highway 35 and State Highway 36 were severely flooded.

The storm claimed the lives of at least 17 people in New Jersey. In Passaic floodwaters from the Passaic River inundated part of the city and in South Jersey a tornado brought destruction to certain areas.

In Hopewell Township three police officers had to be rescued after being swept by floodwaters and clinging on to trees for hours and firing guns to signal for help.
