HAZLET, NJ — Hazlet Township has received a $361,817 Monmouth County Open Space Grant to help fund the construction of a year-round recreation building at their municipal complex.

On Thursday, Oct. 9, Mayor Michael Sachs accepted the grant at a meeting of the Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners, which awards these grants to projects that enhance residents’ quality of life, preserve open space, improve local parks and beautify communities.

This is the latest in multiple grants awarded for the new facility at the municipal complex, township officials said.

In November 2024, the township received a $475K Open Space Grant for the project, and in 2023, the township secured $343,000 in first-phase funding.

With the town’s new $361,817 open space grant and a $95,000 grant from the NJ Local Recreational Improvement Grant Fund, this brings the total amount in state and county funding for the project to $1.275 million.

“The Municipal Open Space Grant (MOSG) program is one of many ways in which the county works cooperatively with municipal partners to ensure local parks are built and upgraded for our residents,” County Commissioner Director Thomas Arnone previously said. “Having beautiful parks and open space provides a great way to help residents maintain and improve their physical and mental health.”

According to township officials, the proposed 25,000-square-foot facility will be located in Veterans Park on the site of the former outdoor roller hockey rink.

Designed with a flexible layout, the indoor recreation center will feature year-round space for pickleball courts, a multipurpose athletic court and a fitness area.

The town’s goal is to have all funding in place and the facility completed by 2027, officials said.
