Here’s Why Tony Was Shouted Out As A Holmdel Star Student

We all know students who excel in academic, fine arts or volunteer service. Here's one local resident who is inspiring others in Holmdel.

Here is Tony, of Holmdel, in a much younger family photo. He has overcome many health problems, including bouts with cancer. But he was accomplished in school and Scouts and now attends Brookdale Community College, his grandmother notes.

HOLMDEL, NJ — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Betty Dworkin, who nominated Tony of Holmdel.

She says Tony is an inspiration. He has faced cancer and other health issues. But he was an Eagle Scout, an honor student in high school and now attends college and advocates for cancer research.

How do you know the star local student?

Grandson

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Tony is a 4-time cancer survivor, starting at age 2 1/2 with high risk neuroblastoma. Over the next few years he has had many surgeries plus a kidney transplant. The last bout of cancer put him in a wheelchair, unable to use his hands as well as others. However, he has made Eagle Scout, graduated from Holmdel High as an honor student and is now a student at Brookdale. He has spoken at many venues for more research dollars and less toxic treatment. I could go on about why I think he should be nominated but I believe you get the picture

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

He never stops trying.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Tony!
