What drove you to seek public office?
My husband and I, along with our four children, have been blessed to call Holmdel our home for the past twenty-three years.
My involvement with the community began during our first year, with the Pop Warner program. For the next fifteen years, I was entrenched in coaching youth sports, being a board member, and spending weekends at the Roggy Field snack stand. I helped put together the first girls' CYO basketball program for St. Catharine’s Church. I volunteered as a Religious Education instructor, put together a mock trial program for some of the elementary school students, and then expanded my involvement to the Planning Board.
Then, three years ago, I was honored to join the Township Committee and became involved with the Green Team, our Holmdel Committee for the 250th birthday of the United States, and the Holmdel Heritage Committee.
I share this because the idea of community is important to me. We sometimes lose sight of what is important, and it is healthy to go back to basics; family and community give us our roots and foundation. Being involved in this aspect has been fulfilling to me and is my small way of making a difference, fostering an environment where our residents are happy to belong.
What sets you apart from the other candidates?
In the professional arena, I have run my own small business as a lawyer. My focus has been in the areas of family law, real estate, mediation (private and court-appointed), and wills and estates. During the past five years, I have also served as a municipal court prosecutor, working in some of the busiest municipalities in the state. I work hand in hand with law enforcement and represent victims.
The ability to listen to people, to help arrive at resolutions and find solutions has been my focus for the last thirty years. This has all prepared me to work with our township residents, employees and professionals in addressing Holmdel's needs. I know how to listen and I respect that people often have different opinions, ideas and struggles. I recognize that progress does not occur if we always have the same view as others and do not listen to alternate ideas or perspectives.
It is my ability to address, handle business, and make decisions affecting people’s lives, in this manner, that makes me a great fit for the Holmdel Township Committee.
What do you see as the biggest issue Holmdel is facing, and how will you resolve it?
My priority for the upcoming term is to keep Holmdel moving forward. We are strong financially, academically, and socially.
Holmdel is rich in history, and the ability to serve Holmdel during our 250th anniversary is an opportunity to renew the excitement of our municipality’s history. Fiscal responsibility is always at the forefront of goals, and with the strong team we have in place, we can continue to make decisions that benefit Holmdel.
It is important to me to maintain the character of Holmdel, continuing to preserve open space and to honor the treasures and historical sites we have here. During my first term, we secured and preserved significant open space by using our open space funds, securing grants, and working with the county. I intend to continue that momentum.
It is also my goal to address affordable housing in a responsible manner, as we have already done by reducing our Trenton-mandated required number of units while continuing to fight the ambiguity, applicability and other issues related to it. Holmdel is a named party in that litigation.
What are past accomplishments or experiences that make you qualified for this position?
My career has situated me very well for handling the business of Holmdel. My involvement within the community in many different arenas has enabled me to "know" Holmdel and all that happens here.
During the past three years, I have had the pleasure of working as a liaison to several committees, which I have treated not simply as being a liaison, but as being a participant. This has encouraged community participation in our township events, such as Earth Day, Heritage Day, and our upcoming 250th year celebration. It connects residents with our governing body.
Our township committee has welcomed transparency by creating advisory committees for finance (our budget) and the vacant Vonage property. It is important to us, to me, that our community is part of our planning, and I encourage that by being present, being part of what our residents are doing, and being transparent.
If elected, what do you most hope to achieve in Holmdel?
In addition to what I have already mentioned, one of my goals for the upcoming term is to focus a bit more on our seniors, which includes making certain that the Vonage property has a dedicated space for them. I would like to see more activities, more events, for our seniors, as friendship and socialization are key to longevity and happiness. Doing that simply takes attention and planning.
My goal is to continue giving residents a voice and enhancing the relationship between the committees and groups with the governing body.
Name one thing about Holmdel that always makes you smile.
The enthusiasm of our volunteers and employees makes me smile. I appreciate the residents, the volunteers, our first responders, our police force, and all the folks who work for Holmdel.
As a representative of the town, we often address serious, life-altering decisions that will dictate the future of Holmdel and its residents. What makes me smile is the willingness of our employees and volunteers to help when needed, often without even asking, as well as their positive attitude. It makes me smile to know they care.
Quite simply, it has been an honor to serve as Deputy Mayor with Brian Foster at the helm as Mayor, and learning from former Mayor DJ Lucarelli and former Mayor Rocco Impreveduto, while gaining new insight and perspective from Committeeman Joe Romano.
