HAZLET, NJ — Residents - especially the kids among them - can look forward to a pretty cool playground renovation at Veterans Park this fall.

The Hazlet Township Committee has approved an "adventurous" playground to replace the more traditional structures at the playground right near the Town Hall.

"As part of current and future park improvements, we are excited to see new playground equipment being installed at Veterans Park this fall," said Mayor Michael Sachs.

He said parts of the new playground are ADA approved and so are inclusive for a range of abilities. A yellow rocker promotes inclusivity and can accommodate several kids at once, the township said.

There are two main structures: a lower one for children ages two to five and a higher, more complex one for children five to 12 years of age.

Expect bold colors - purple, green and yellow. And the poured rubberized surface makes for a safer "fall zone."

The plan was approved at the March 26 meeting. Township Administrator Robert A Bengivenga Jr. said the cost is $330,000, half of which is funded by an open space grant, the rest from the township's capital improvement fund.

He said it is expected to be open for use in September. The playground is designed by Burke Playgrounds, the township said.

The township said other recreation amenities are either completed or planned. In July, a pickleball and tennis outdoor complex was installed on Green Acres Drive. In October, there was a ribbon cutting for an inclusive playground with ball courts at Freedom Park, at 8th Street and Brown Avenue for the major project there.
