Star Student: Heidi, Now At Rutgers, Excelled In Scouting

We all know students who excel in academics, fine arts or volunteer service. Here's one student who is having an impact in Holmdel-Hazlet.

Heidi, now a college student at Rutgers University, found great success in Scouting, becoming one of the first female Eagle Scouts.

HOLMDEL-HAZLET, NJ — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Darlene Kiss, who nominated Heidi, now a sophomore at Rutgers University, of the Holmdel-Hazlet area.

Heidi found her niche in Scouting, and was one of the first female Scouts to achieve the rank of Eagle. Now a sophomore at Rutgers University, Heidi still returns to her troop to help out younger Scouts.

She has spoken before the State House on the value of Scouting.

How do you know the star local student?

Child

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

My daughter was bullied from a very young age and seemed to try to fit in. It was not until she joined Scouts BSA that she found her niche.

She became one of the first female Scouts in Monmouth County to obtain the rank of Eagle, and even after she aged out she remains faithful to her troop. She comes back and helps out the younger Scouts. In the past, she has spoken for New Jersey First Lady, Tammy Murphy, and before the State House about Scouting.

She not only loves Scouting, but has been very active in clubs at Rutgers. She volunteers her time for the Stevens Johnson Syndrome Foundation and at her church.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

She has overcome adversity.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Heidi, sophomore at Rutgers University!
