Arrest Made In Hazlet Taxi Driver Slaying

Gaetano S. Scannavino, 25, was arrested in New York and is being held pending extradition proceedings, the prosecutor's office said.

HAZLET, NJ — The fugitive wanted in connection with the fatal motel shooting in Hazlet last weekend has been arrested, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond Santiago announced Friday night.

Gaetano S. Scannavino, 25, whose last known address is in Brooklyn, was arrested there Thursday by members of the 61st and 62nd precincts of the New York City Police Department, Santiago said Friday night.

Scannavino was wanted in connection with the fatal shooting that left Anthony Hill, 42, of Eatontown, dead at the Holly Hill Motel on Sept. 14.

Hill, a taxi driver, was found near a dumpster at the motel, dead of multiple gunshot wounds, authorities have said.

An investigation by the Prosecutor's Office and Hazlet Police led to Scannavino being identified as the suspect, Santiago said. He has been charged with murder, carjacking, and two weapons offenses.

Scannavino is being held in jail in New York pending extradition to New Jersey for proceedings in Superior Court in Monmouth County, the prosecutor said.
