DWI, Heroin Posssession: Recent Police Activity in Sparta

Recent activity as reported by the Sparta Police Department.

Sparta police reported the following recent incidents:

Nov. 2

Officer Chris Favaro pulled over a speeding Dodge on Route 15 around 10:44 p.m.

Upon arrival, Favaro detected the odor of marijuana.

The officer asked the driver, David L. Jackson, 22, of Detroit, to step out of his vehicle. Favaro said he saw Jackson toss a plastic baggie containing marijuana into the back seat, which the latter admitted to throwing.

A blunt was found in Jackson's pocket.

He was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Cpl. Rob Fraser and Officer Tom Snyder assisted with the investigation.

Nov. 4

A 50-year-old Andover man was arrested for possession of heroin after a motor vehicle stop on East Shore Trail.

Cpl. Marc Rubino pulled over a 2002 Volkswagen after seeing that the driver was not wearing his seatbelt.

The driver, Thomas Puco, was unable to provide any documents and Rubino learned that Puco's license was suspended.

Rubino saw Puco place something in his mouth and conceal an item between his legs.

An investigation revealed the item to be a wax paper fold containing heroin. Two more wax paper folds containing heroin, along with five torn and empty folds and three glass stems with burnt residue inside were found.

Puco was charged with possession of CDS and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Nov. 6

DWI arrest

Police arrested a 54-year-old Pennsylvania man for DWI on Sparta Avenue around 10:19 a.m.

During the motor vehicle stop, Sgt. Joseph Pensado came to the opinion that Terry Herring was intoxicated.

Herring failed subsequent field sobriety tests.

He was charged with DWI, DWI in a school zone and issued summonses for having an open alcohol container and for careless driving.

Heroin arrest

Officer Tom Snyder arrested a 27-year-old Vernon man for possession of heroin and paraphernalia after a motor vehicle stop on Route 517.

Synder observed white pills on the rear seat and assorted paraphernalia on the front passenger side of the vehicle in plain view.

A search of the 1996 Chevy yielded 10 wax paper folds containing heroin.
