Snow, Low Wind Chills Could Hit Hopatcong, Sparta

The Hopatcong and Sparta Schools have already called two-hour delays for Thursday, with the potential of snow overnight.

HOPATCONG, NJ — Another round of snow has been forecast for the Hopatcong and Sparta areas overnight Wednesday into Thursday, with both Hopatcong and Sparta Schools having already each called a two-hour delay.

The National Weather Service has forecasted the potential for about two inches of snow, with the possibility of slippery road conditions for the morning commute as roads thaw and then re-freeze.

Hopatcong Borough Schools posted about the delay on its website, noting AM preschool and AlphaBest are canceled for Thursday.

The Sparta Schools alerted families in a text message on Wednesday night of the planned delay because of "the incoming winter weather."

The storm is likely begin as rain on Wednesday night before it transitions to snow overnight into Thursday, the National Weather Service forecasts.

Ahead of the storm, the Sparta Police Department provided some information about the forecast:


A temperature drop is expected to follow on Thursday, plunging from 21 to 5 degrees overnight into Friday, with the possibility of wind chills hovering around -6 on Thursday night.

Through Thursday Morning: A chance of rain and snow before 2am, then snow. Low around 26. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Thursday: Snow likely, mainly before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a temperature falling to around 21 by 5pm. North wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 5. Wind chill values as low as -6. North wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 19. Wind chill values as low as -6. North wind around 5 mph.

Friday Night: A slight chance of snow after 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 4. North wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 22.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 11.
