State Trooper Delivers Own Son On Side Of Sparta Highway

Mom and dad wanted to deliver the baby in a hospital— but the baby had other plans.

SPARTA, NJ — Stories about police officers delivering babies on the side of the road or in the mother's home are not that unusual. What makes this story different is that the baby State Trooper Rob Rohel helped deliver on the side of a Sparta highway was his own son.

When Jenna Rohel went into labor the evening of Sept. 19, Rob Rohel loaded the family into their Jeep Wrangler and started driving to Denville Hospital to welcome their son. Their son had other plans, State Police said, and the Rohels didn't have time to make it to the hospital. Baby Culver was born on the side of Route 94 in Sparta Township at 8:27 p.m.

Culver was in good health, and began crying, police said. Rob Rohel handed Culver to Jenna Rohel, and the family continued on their way to the hospital, all without calling 911.

"Join us in congratulating the Rohel family on their new edition! And although Jenna and Rob remained calm, cool, and collected without having to dial 9-1-1, we recommend you do should you find yourselves in a similar situation!" State Police said.
