Howell, Farmingdale Open Cooling Centers As Heat Wave Worsens

Howell has a Code Red alert in effect; will have two cooling centers open Thursday and Friday, as well as one in Farmingdale.

HOWELL, NJ — A Code Red alert will be in effect in town this Thursday and Friday for excessive heat and humidity, the Howell Township Office of Emergency Management says.

And two cooling centers in the township and one in Farmingdale will be open during both days.

Heat indexes could reach 100 to 105 degrees, said the OEM Coordinator Victor Cook.

Temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-90s, with the heat index climbing to possibly 105 degrees over the next two-day period, he said in an announcement.

Emergency Management urges residents to take precautions to prevent serious illness that can result from extreme heat, especially among the most vulnerable populations: seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions.

Vulnerable residents should use air conditioning to stay cool, drink water at regular intervals, and limit strenuous activity, especially during the hottest parts of the day.

Three cooling centers will be open and available to residents from 11 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. both days, Cook said.

They are located at:

  • The Senior Center 251 Preventorium Road.
  • The Town Hall Meeting Room, second floor, 4567 Route 9 north.
  • Farmingdale Community Center, 13 Asbury Ave., Farmingdale.
