Howell Police Warn Of Surge In Scams Targeting Seniors
Telephone scams are on the rise. Police are urging residents to be aware and to make sure their family members and friends are on guard too.
HOWELL, NJ — Howell Township police issued a warning to township residents of an increase in telephone scams targeting senior citizens.
"In all of the recent incidents that have been reported the initial contact occurs over the phone," police said. "There are various stories used during these telephone scams but the most common relate to an unpaid bill (IRS or utility bill) or money needed for a relative in trouble (bail, medical care)."
"In most of these cases it is impossible to recover the funds that have been lost," police said.

"Never pay anyone who requests payment for one of these stories via GIFT CARD," police said. "Once the gift card numbers are relayed over the phone to the scammer, the money is GONE!!!"
"Never arrange for anyone to come to your residence to 'pick up the money' in person and bring it to settle the alleged debt for you," police said.

Howell police also shared the following pamphlet and urged residents to share it with anyone who might be susceptible to being taken advantage of.
