Jersey Shore Beachgoers Warned of Rip Current Risk from Cristobal

The tropical storm, expected to become a hurricane by Tuesday, is expected to remain offshore, forecasters say

Dangerous rip currents and strong waves will continue to be an issue this week as Tropical Storm Cristobal moves north through the Atlantic this week, forecasters say.

The storm, which had sustained winds of 60 mph as of 8 a.m. Monday, is expected to reach hurricane status later Monday or Tuesday as it continues to strengthen, according to the NOAA advisory. At the same time, the storm -- which was located 715 miles southwest of Bermuda -- is expected to turn to the north-northeast, keeping it away from the Jersey Shore.

The projected path of the storm has it off the Jersey Shore by Thursday, according to NOAA. That will result in long-period wave swells that increase the probability of rip currents.
