Lakewood Man Dies, 4 Injured In One-Car Crash In Howell

Driver of an SUV on Lanes Mill Road in Howell late Wednesday lost control of the car, hitting a concrete mailbox, then a landscape wall.

HOWELL, NJ — A Lakewood man, 51, died and his four passengers were in stable condition after a single-car accident at around 11 p.m. Wednesday on a curving road in Howell, police said.

The man, who was not yet identified by police, died at the scene of the crash, according to police.

Neither he nor the other occupants were identified, pending notification to their families, police said Thursday.

Police said the man was driving a Toyota Rav4 eastbound on Lanes Mill Road in the area of Lanes Pond Road when the crash happened.

He was negotiating a curve in the road when the vehicle ran off the road to the right and struck a concrete-style mailbox, police said.

The collision with the mailbox caused the vehicle to lose control and rotate. It then collided with a brick landscaping wall on a nearby property, which caused the vehicle to overturn.

The driver became trapped in the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the scene, police said.

There were two adult passengers and two juvenile passengers in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The passengers of the vehicle were taken to a local hospital and remain in stable condition, police said.

This incident is under investigation by the Howell Township Police Department.
