5 Tips for a Safe Halloween

Happy Halloween to all! It’s Halloween, and now, not only will all of Jefferson’s little ghosts and goblins have to deal with darkness while they trick or treat, but there will be snow mounds to deal with as well, after Saturday’s historic storm.  So, to keep all the township’s children safe, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) offers these tips:

1. Costumes: Make sure all costumes, masks and shoes fit will to ensure proper vision and prevent falls. Test make-up in a small area first to be sure it won’t cause skin irritation. Fasten reflective tape to costumes so drivers can see children.
2. Accessories: Anything that comes with a costume, like a sword, knife, pitchfork or witches’ broom, should be soft and flexible.
3. Safety in Numbers: Be sure your children trick-or-treat with a group and a responsible adult is nearby.
4. On the Road: Have kids walk on sidewalks if possible, or on the far edge of the road, facing traffic. Be sure kids have a flashlight so they can see and drivers can see them.
5. Testing the Treats: Don’t let kids eat anything until a trusted adult has inspected it. Don’t eat homemade treats made by strangers, and try to have kids eat only factory-wrapped treats.
