Bridge Deemed Unsafe, Part Of Route 15 Closed In Jefferson: Officials

JEFFERSON, NJ — State Route 15 southbound is closed until further notice at the bridge over the Rockaway River in Jefferson, officials said.

A detour has been posted for drivers, according to police in neighboring Sparta.

The bridge was originally scheduled to have one lane open during ongoing construction to replace it, but was later deemed unsafe, per police and the Sussex County Sheriff. The southbound bridge will be closed for an undetermined amount of time, according to the NJ Department of Transportation.

State Route 15 northbound and Berkshire Valley Road will be open for travel, according to officials.

The following detour will be in place for the Route 15 southbound bridge over the Rockaway River, NJDOT said:

  • Motorists on Route 15 southbound wishing to take the bridge over Rockaway River will be directed to take the ramp to Edison Road/Lake Hopatcong/Mount Arlington/U and Left Turns, which is approximately two miles north of the bridge
  • Continue on Edison Road/CR 615
  • Turn left onto Espanong Road/CR 615
  • Take a slight left onto Minnisink Road
  • Turn left onto Berkshire Valley Road
  • Take the ramp for Route 15 southbound
