While the majority of Jefferson Township residents were shoveling out of the surprise October snowstorm, members of Cub Scout Pack 49 were aboard the US Coast Guard Cutter Taney in Baltimore, learning about life at sea during World War II.
The USCGC Taney is the last vessel still afloat to have witnessed the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7,Β 1941.Β She served throughout WWII, the Korean and Vietnam conflicts.Β
As visitors aboard the Taney, the scouts partook in hands-on activities, including understanding steam engines, navigation, running damage control systems, and signaling.

After an evening full of activities, the scouts settled in to a night aboard the Taney, sleeping in the actual racks of the Coast Guardsmen who served aboard her.
Scouts also had the opportunity to board, explore and learn about the USS Constellation and USS Torsk, which are included within the historic ships in Baltimoreβs fleet.
