Jefferson Helping to Feed the Hungry in County-Wide Program

With September being National Hunger Month, Jefferson Township is looking to make a difference for people in need, and claim bragging rights for collecting the most food of any town in Morris County.

Jefferson is participating in the county-wide McMatch program, Morris County Municipal Action to Curb Hunger. Residents can drop off food in person to various locations in town, or donate online.

“Each town can choose the food pantry they’d like to donate to from a list provided by the county,” said Head Grace Rhinesmith, who, along with Cindee DeGennaro of the health department, is spearheading the program in town. “Since both ’s food pantry and the are on the list, those are the ones we’ve chosen.”

Between now and Sept. 21, non-perishable food items may be dropped off at the Senior Center, the or the .

Online giving is also a possibility with this program, Rhinesmith said. Through yougivegoods.com, residents can order what they’d like to donate and yougivegoods.com ships the order to Jefferson.

“The township doesn’t get any reward if we win, just bragging rights and the knowledge that we’ve helped so many people,” Rhinesmith said. “Summer is a tough time of year for food pantries. They go very low in the summer months, since so many organizations that contribute don’t meet during the summer. This is a good chance to restock the food pantry shelves.”
