Jefferson Superintendent's Contract Renewed

Dr. Kathaleen Fuchs takes a $12,787 pay cut due to salary cap limitations.

The Jefferson Township Board of Education renewed superintendent Kathaleen Fuchs’ contract for a period of five years at its meeting on Wednesday night.

Fuchs’ salary will be $167,500, the maximum allowed under guidelines put into place by Gov. Christie. This amounts to a base salary of $165,000, plus a high school stipend of $2,500. Fuchs will take a cut in pay of $12,787 from the $180,287 she made as of the end of the contract that expired on June 30, 2011.

According to the contract, the salary is based upon the “legality of state regulations existing at the time of approval…” that imposes a cap on the superintendent’s salary.

The contract also states that if the salary cap regulation is deemed invalid, Fuchs’ salary would automatically increase to $180,287, with a minimum 2% salary increase for each year of the contract.

In addition to her salary, Fuchs will receive 15 sick days and 35 vacation days per year. Click here to see a full copy of the contract.

In other news, the board hired the law firm of Schwartz, Simon, Edelstein and Celso of Morristown as board attorney for 2011-2012.

Finally the board adopted a resolution to approve the application for a waiver of N.J.A.C. 6:8 3.(b)1, that requires a principal in each building.

“The Milton and Cozy Lake schools share a principal,” Fuchs said. “This is something we’ve always done, but we need to approve the application for a waiver every year.”
