Residents of Jefferson Township filed 154 appeals on $54,000,000 of assessed taxes. This equals approximately two percent of the township’s net equalized value of $2,732,000,000, according to business administrator James Leach.
The next step is for the township tax assessor to try and settle the appeal.
“The burden of proof is on the party that filed the appeal to prove why they should have their assessed property value lowered,” Leach said. “They can do that by providing proof of comparable values in the area.”

If the appeal cannot be settled at the township level, there can be a hearing before the county tax board. If an agreement cannot be reached then, there can be an appeal before the state tax board.
The appeals will start to be heard in early May, township officials said.
