Slow Election Day in Jefferson

Without a local race, voter turnout is low.

With no local races for Jefferson Township residents to vote on, turnout at the polls was slow on Election Day.

As of about 5 p.m., the polls at had seen only about 340 voters. The busiest time, according to poll worker Lisa Swerzenski, was during the post-work hour, when a β€œcrowd” of seven people at the same time was on hand to wait their turn at the six available voting booths.

Lack of voters made for a somewhat slow day for poll workers.

β€œIt’s much slower when there’s nothing local to vote on,” Swerzenski said.

The poll workers, who work a 15-hour day with a one-hour lunch break, keep themselves busy by β€œtrying to be as helpful as possible,” Swerzenski said.
