Stay Off The Roads, Jefferson Police Warn

The roads are messy as sleet and freezing rain continue.

JEFFERSON, NJ β€” Icy road conditions have caused several crashes in Jefferson Township already, police said.

Police are asking residents to stay off the roads as sleet and frozen rain are expected to continue through the rush hour.

"Please help our police & public works, stay home unless you if you absolutely have to go out. Snow & sleet are expected to turn to freezing rain in the next few hours," Mayor Eric Wilsusen said.

Have to head out? AAA shared these winter safe driving tips:

  • Take the time to make sure snow and ice are cleared from your vehicle. Especially the hood, roof and windows. It's the law in NJ!
  • Drive with your headlights on – it's the best way to see and be seen.
  • Leave extra space between you and the vehicle in front of you – increasing your following distance will allow you more time to see problems and more space to react to them.
  • Lower your speed – the faster you go the harder it is to stop or swerve.
  • If your car goes into a skid, turn the steering wheel in the direction you want the vehicle to go – avoid jamming on the brakes.
  • Make sure your cell phone is fully charged before heading out.
