Two JTHS Students Raise Money for Cancer Research

Brooke Lehman and Shannon Muller working on DECA competition.

Two JDECA students took over Gatwyns Restaurant on Wednesday night.

No, the takeover was not anything unlawful or illegal. Gatwyns helped Brooke Lehman and Shannon Muller gain donations for their state DECA project. The girls are selling bracelets for cancer awareness. So far they have raised $750, which is $250 more than the $500 they need to be attend the state competition.

β€œWe are selling the bracelets at lunch, and we have them advertised with fliers around the school,” Lehman said. β€œWe also have jars in the teachers’ rooms. And Gatwyns gave us a portion of their proceeds on Wednesday night.”

DECA, which is a marketing and business class, offers a competition for its students. They must choose a cause to support, and write a 14-page marketing plan outlining how they will raise money for that project. If the project raises $300, it gets recognized at the state competition. If it raises $500 and the paper receives a grade of 70 or better, the students go on to compete in the national competition. Both the state and national competitions take place in the spring.
