VIDEO: 5 Things You Need to Know About Sun Safety

FDA dermatologist shares her tips.

Forecasts show temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s over the next few days. Meaning: Lots of heat and, of course, lots of sun.

Patch found tips from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on sun saftey. Before you hit the shores of Lake Hopatcong, check out the video to the right and advice from FDA Dermatologist Dr. Jill Lindstrom below.

  1. You Need to Know to Follow Directions:Most products say to reapply at least every two hours and more often if you're sweating or jumping in and out of the water, Lindstrom said.
  2. You Need to Know 15's the Number: The FDA encourages using no less than SPF 15. Lindstrom said these sun screens can help reduce the risk of sunburn, skin cancer and early skin aging "when used as directed with other sun protection measures."
  3. You Need to Know the Myth: Lindstrom said there's no scientific evidence that anything higher than SPF 50 is more effective.
  4. You Need to Know Nothing's Water or Sweat Proof: Sun screens many only use the term water resistant and must indicate how long water resistance lasts, Lindstrom said.
  5. You Need to Know Sun Screen is Changing: But the FDA continues to monitor products, Lindstrom said.
