Woman Killed By Cop Estranged Husband In Jefferson Identified

Lt. John Formisano has been charged with murder and attempted murder in the killing of his estranged wife, and shooting of her boyfriend.

JEFFERSON, NJ — A Jefferson woman killed by her police officer estranged husband late Sunday night has been identified as 37-year-old Christine Formisano, Morris County Prosecutor Fredric M. Knapp said Monday night.

John Formisano, 49, a police officer in Newark, was arrested around 2 a.m. on Monday morning, about two and a half hours after he was accused of shooting Christine Formisano dead and injuring a 40-year-old man reported to be her boyfriend. Police did not release his identity.

John Formisano has been charged with murder, attempted murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Jefferson Township police were called to a 1 Mirror Way home around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday for reports of shots fired. Police say they found Christine Formisano's body on the doorstep at nearby 5 Mirror Place, and found the injured 40-year-old man inside of 1 Mirror Place.

John Formisano was arrested shortly afterward at his parents home in Livingston, officials said, and the gun allegedly using in the killing was recovered from his car.

"The Newark Public Safety Department is deeply saddened by the family tragedy involving Newark Police Lt. John Formisano, Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said in a statement. "Our foremost concern, of course, is for the couple's two children who have lost their mother and for the family of the victim.

"Lt. Formisano's colleagues in our police division were shocked by the news of the shooting and we recognize it this is a tragedy beyond comprehension for all involved."

The couples two children were uninjured in the shooting, officials said.

John Formisano was off-duty at the time of the shooting. He is a 24-year veteran of the force.
