JERSEY CITY, NJ — A man was found dead Friday night after firefighters extinguished a blaze at a makeshift shelter, officials said.

Shortly after 6 p.m. on Friday, the Jersey City Fire Department responded to a report of a fire in the vicinity of 1000 Newark Ave., said the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office. The area is near entrances to several highways and the Pulaski Skyway.

After the fire was out, firefighters found an unidentified male in a fire-damaged makeshift shelter, prosecutors said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 6:49 p.m.

The official cause and manner of death will be determined by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, prosecutors said.

The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force is investigating the cause of the fire with help from the Jersey City Fire Department.
