📰 News we're reading

1. Jersey City Receives Grant to Develop Age Friendly Action Plan (hudpost.com) — Jersey City has secured a $24,000 state grant to design its first Age-Friendly Action Plan focused on the needs of residents 60 and older. Local partners will survey seniors across neighborhoods about transportation, housing, healthcare navigation, and social life, then use the findings to shape future city policies and programs that better support aging in place.

2. NJ Approves School Cell Phone Ban: What To Know (patch.com) — Jersey City families should know that New Jersey is poised to enact a statewide cell phone and smart-device ban during the school day, building on the Jersey City School District’s own October ban. Lawmakers say the move will cut classroom distractions and support student mental health, while critics worry about emergency communication. Districts would still customize how strictly they enforce the rules.

3. First modern tunnel boring machines in NJ to make Gateway project a reality in 2026 (nj.com subscription) — Massive tunnel-boring machines will arrive in Hudson County next year to start drilling the new Gateway rail tunnels between New Jersey and New York, a project that will reshape regional commuting. The story also recalls an 1880 tunnel disaster and notes that a memorial to the fallen workers stands in a Jersey City cemetery, tying the modern effort to local history.

4. Bayonne council votes unanimously to name Public Safety Dir. Kubert interim mayor (hudsoncountyview.com) — Bayonne’s city council has tapped Public Safety Director Robert Kubert to serve as interim mayor once Jimmy Davis resigns January 1 to become Hudson County sheriff. Several candidates have already filed for Bayonne’s May mayoral race, while others, including an aide to outgoing Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, are still weighing possible bids.
