Meanwhile, residents said that the day before, they expect all of the city's major mayoral candidates to appear at the City Council meeting.

In a release sent out by activists, they wrote, "On Wednesday, January 29, 2025, during the public speaking portion of the regularly scheduled City Council meeting, tenants and residents will host 'The People's State of the City Address' at Jersey City Hall, 280 Grove St. This unique event will bring together all declared Jersey City mayoral candidates, including both council candidates, and residents from all six wards to discuss the city's future. The session is expected to begin between 7:30 and 8 p.m., following earlier agenda items in the council meeting."

The Issues

Among the other issues expected to be addressed are rising rents, development, and crime.

Two young Jersey City residents were killed this month by gunshots in separate incidents, with teen boys charged in both deaths.

But last year, homicides in the city dropped into the single digits for the first time.
