Abandoned Dogs In 'Horrid Condition' Treated By Popcorn Park Shelter

The two beagles, now named Brian and Brianne, are being treated for their neglect by Popcorn Park in Lacey.

LACEY, NJ — Two beagles abandoned and dumped in Ocean County are now being taken care of by Associated Humane Popcorn Park Shelter (AHS) in Lacey.

On July 6, a motorist found a senior male beagle wandering the woods by the Parkway entrance in Waretown, AHS wrote on Facebook. As AHS picked up the dog from police, they found out a female beagle was in the same area. Both were taken to the shelter for the healing process to begin.

The male, named Brian by the shelter, is a senior dog who has been neglected "for quite some time," AHS wrote.

"He has terrible dental disease, he is completely emaciated, and has a terrible case of demodex mange. Bloodwork revealed that he is also anemic and in early renal failure," the shelter said.

The female, Brianne, appears to be younger and in slightly better shape than Brian but still shows signs of neglect. "She has a skin condition, cherry eye, and she's been neglected overall as evidenced by her filthy coat and overgrown nails," the shelter said.

The two appear to have been hunting dogs, based on their behavior outdoors, the shelter said. Even in this condition, they are still lovable, cheerful pets.

"Both of these dogs, despite their horrid condition, are wagging their tails non-stop," AHS said. "They are so incredibly happy to get attention and would have you pet them all day if you could."

While the shelter takes care of these pups, they are looking for information about who dumped them. If you know anything, contact AHS at 609-693-1900 or office@ahsppz.org.

As Brian and Brianne will need a lot of medical care, you can contribute to the shelter's ResQ Fund to support them and the many other animals in their care.

"If you are infuriated by this, imagine how these dogs feel. Surely they dedicated their lives to whomever owned them, only to have their devotion rewarded like this. It's gut-wrenching and our hearts break for them," AHS said.
