Lacey Police: Don't Fall For This Scam

Residents were told they were victims of a scam, then told to buy $3,600 in gift cards, which they did, police chief says

LACEY TOWNSHIP, NJ - A township couple who received a message on their iPad that they were victims of a scam were victimized again when they responded to the scammer's instructions, Police Chief Michael C. DiBella said.

Officer Jason Lee responded to Parkers Point Boulevard in Forked River at 6:56 p.m. on June 28 on a fraud report. The victims told Lee that they had received a message on their iPad that they had been scammed and to call the phone number on the screen, the chief said.

When they called the number, a man who said his name was “Mike Start,” told them to buy $3,600 worth of Google Play gift cards and then give him the bar codes. The victims bought the gift cards and provided the codes. Shortly after, the couple realized they had been scammed and called police, DiBella said.
