Man Stole Idling Car, Struck Owner, Then Fled: Lacey Police

William Sabie is accused of a carjacking where he got into an idling car and struck its owner before fleeing and crashing the car, cops say.

LACEY, NJ — A Lanoka Harbor man is accused of a carjacking where he got into an idling car and struck its owner before fleeing and eventually crashing into a light post, police said.

Police went to 706 North Main St. (the plaza with Fevola's and Supercuts) at about 9:45 p.m. on Dec. 6 for the report of a stolen vehicle, police said.

William Sabie, 44, had entered the idling car while its owner was outside removing frost from the windshield, police said.

Sabie then began to drive away, striking the owner before fleeing the area, police said.

He ultimately crashed into decorative light posts on Railroad Avenue, where officers found him in the driver's seat, police said.

Sabie was charged with carjacking, theft of a motor vehicle, burglary, assault by auto, DWI, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury and failure to report.

He was taken to Ocean County Jail where he sits pending a court appearance.
