Lacey Police Issue E-Bike Warning Ahead Of Christmas

If you're thinking of giving your kid an e-bike for this gift-giving season, Lacey police are offering some info to help you decide.

LACEY, NJ — E-bikes are growing in popularity, and they're sure to be on dozens of Christmas lists this holiday season. If you're thinking of buying one for your child, Lacey police want you to know all of the facts behind these vehicles.

"We certainly understand the relentless pressure that your child may be placing upon you to buy them an e-bike!!" Lacey police said. "We are also very well aware of the type of e-bikes that are being sold on the open market, most of which are illegal and inappropriate for children."

As they grow in popularity, e-bikes are also a growing problem in Lacey, police said. They pose many safety risks and recently, there have been injuries and fatalities linked to them across the state.

Police shared some things to be aware of:

  • Every bicycle and e-bike operator must follow all of the same rules as prescribed by NJ Title 39. This means, regardless of age, children are expected to know the rules of the road when riding their bicycle or E-Bike.
  • There are no age restrictions on an E-Bike or E-Scooter that goes 20mph or less, and has a motor of 750watts or less. This type of e-bike or scooter does not need to be registered or insured, nor does the operator need a license. Any operator or passenger under 17 must wear a helmet.
  • You must be 15+ with a drivers license or moped license to operate an E-Bike that goes between 20-28mph, with an electric engine over 750watts, or a gas engine under 50cc. This type of e-bike is considered a motorized bicycle and must be registered and insured. Helmets must be worn at all times regardless of age.
  • You must be 17+ with a drive's license and a motorcycle endorsement to operate an E-Bike that goes 29+mph or with a gas engine over 50cc. It must be registered and insured in the state of NJ and you must wear a helmet at all times.

Lacey police said they will always prioritize the safety of their residents.
