Local Bookstore to Hold Dr. Seuss Birthday Party

The party on Saturday, March 3 will feature cake, balloons, book readings, games and more

Kids are invited to a birthday party in honor of Dr. Seuss at on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“It will be like a little kid’s birthday party,” Owner Cindy Arteglier said. “It will be really fun. I think even the parents will get a kick out of it.”

The bookstore will be hosting the party with cake, balloons, games and more.

Four to five of Dr. Seuss’ books will be read during the course of the party. Mayor Mark Dykoff will do the first reading, Cat in the Hat.

After each reading, the kids will participate in a game or craft, including “pin the hat on the cat.”

There will also be a raffle for the parents. The winner will receive a $10 gift card for the store.

Fun Facts about Dr. Seuss:

  • Dr. Seuss, or Theodor Seuss Geisel, was not only a children’s author but a poet and a cartoonist as well.
  • Geisel’s pen names were Dr. Seuss, Theo LeSieg and, in one case, Rosetta Stone.
  • He published 46 children’s books, many of which are based on social and political issues, including anti-consumerism and racial equality.
  • Many adaptations have been created based on his work, including 11 television specials, four films, a Broadway musical and four television series.
  • Dr. Seuss was born in Springfield, Massachusetts. Mulberry Street in Springfield, about a mile from Geisel’s home, became famous in his first children’s book And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street.
  • Geisel worked as an illustrator throughout his career. During World War II, he worked for the animation department of the U.S. Army, writing Design for Death. The film won the 1947 Academy Award for Documentary Feature.
  • Geisel’s birthday, March 2, has been adopted as the annual date for National Read Across America Day. He would have been 108 today.
  • Dr. Seuss has been awarded two Academy awards, two Emmy awards, a Peabody award, the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal and the Pulitzer Prize.
