Lab Monkey Who Escaped From Train Headed For Biomedical Research Lab Rehomed To NJ Zoo
The rhesus macaque was the last escapee from the Mississippi crash to be recovered. Instead of going back to the lab, he has a new home.
LACEY, NJ — Twenty-one rhesus macaques intended for biomedical research were on a truck when it crashed on I-59 in Mississippi. Eight of them escaped; five were killed in the initial search. The last of the three remaining monkeys, only known as NI 62, was found a week later. But instead of going back to the lab, he has a new home and a new life at the Popcorn Park Animal Refuge in Forked River.
The rhesus macaque couldn't go back to the lab after spending time outside. He was taken to Popcorn Park and given a new name, Forrest, to reflect his fresh start. He had a small wound on the bridge of his nose from his escape, but otherwise was in perfect health.
Forrest is now eagerly exploring his new home, enjoying enrichment items such as ropes, toys, and climbing structures, receiving high-quality nutrition, and benefitting from expert care. Refuge staff say that every day he reveals more of his personality as he grows more comfortable in this new environment.

"Caring for Forrest is a reminder of why our work at Popcorn Park is so important," said Cory Scott, Executive Director. "We are honored to provide a safe and peaceful sanctuary for animals like Forrest, who have endured extraordinary circumstances and now deserve a life of care and comfort."
Dec. 2 is Giving Tuesday, and Popcorn Park Animal Refuge invites supporters to contribute to Forrest’s ongoing care. Donations help provide nutritious meals, medical attention, enrichment, and a safe, peaceful environment for Forrest and the other animals at the Refuge and the Associated Humane Societies. Contributions can be made online at AHSCares.org.
