Nuclear Regulatory Commission To Meet With Oyster Creek Officials To Discuss Possible Violation

Meeting will take place at NRC's Region 1 headquarters in Pennsylvania next week.

The Federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission will sit down with the owners of the Oyster Creek Nuclear Plant next week to discuss an apparent violation at the plant, an NRC spokesman said.

The issue involves one of the plant's safety-related pressure relieve valves and has been classified as white" - which means it's of low to moderate safety significance, NRC spokesman Neil R. Sheehan said.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held on March 9 at 10 a.m. in the NRC's Region One Office at 2100 Renaissance Boulevard in King of Prussia, PA.

NRC staff identified the finding during an inspection completed at the end of 2016 that involved one of the plant’s five electromatic relief valves, which would be used to depressurize the reactor during a pipe break to allow coolant to be injected into the reactor core, he said

"If requested by a plant’s owner, a Regulatory Conference is held to discuss an inspection finding and its safety significance, as well as to allow the company an opportunity to clarify any issues raised in the inspection report," Sheehan said. "No decision will be made at the conference regarding the apparent violation or any enforcement."
