Michael A. Carter, 69, passed away on November 25, 2025, at Community General Hospital in Toms River after a battle with cancer, a side effect of his time spent at Ground Zero during the September 11, 2001, World Trade Center attacks. Born and raised in Matawan to the late Jim and Wilma Carter, Michael lived in Suffern, NY until settling in Forked River in 2015.
Michael was a firefighter with the New York Fire Department and retired shortly after the attacks on the World Trade Center. He often spoke of this and how he spent countless hours and days at Ground Zero assisting with recovery efforts. He enjoyed all water sports including boating and jet skiing as well as collecting Lionel Trains and creating beautiful landscapes and backdrops. He was also inducted into the Hall of Fame at Matawan High School. He cherished every moment spent with his family, his fire department, and his dear friends.Predeceased by his siblings Peter and Linda, Michael leaves behind his wife Marian of forty-one years and their two children; Ethan and Lindsey of Rivervale, NJ and Jordan of Mahwah, NJ. He will be missed dearly missed by hisgrandchildren Rylan and Beckett, brother Bill Carter, nieces and nephews; Will, Julia, Morgan, Tim, and Evelyn as well as his sister-in-law Robyn Ebner and her husband Peter of Barnegat and their children; Courtney, Avi, Shannon and Erica.Michael will receive a full fireman's funeral beginning with a viewing held at Waitt Funeral Home, 501 Highway 79, Morganville, NJ 07751 on Friday, December 5, 2025, from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm. On Saturday, December 6, 2025, family and friends are invited to gather directly to Calvary Chapel – Old Bridge, 123 White Oak Lane, Old Bridge, NJ 08857 (www.ccob.org) for an 11:00am funeral service. There will be a luncheon held directly after the funeral at the Buttonwood Manor in Matawan. At Michael's request, cremation will be held privately.
