'Unspeakable' Lacey Murders-Suicide Apparently Stemmed From Marital Dispute, Prosecutor's Office Says

Both Mother And Son Died Of Blunt Force Trauma, Authorities Say

LACEY TOWNSHIP, NJ - The double homicide of a mother and son at a home on Nautilus Boulevard on Wednesday was the apparent result of a marital dispute, Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato and Lacey Police Chief Michael C. DiBella said.

“I hesitantly make this announcement in light of the relentless media interest and subsequent coverage in hopes of quickly putting this sad episode to rest," Coronato said. "It is my hope to minimize the trauma to these families in any way possible.”

The Ocean County Medical Examiner's Office determined that Kimberly Dunphey, 48, died of blunt force trauma injuries resulting from a homicide, as did her son, Owen Scott, age 7, he said.

The suspected perpetrator is Gregg Scott, husband of Kimberly Dunphey and father of Owen Scott. His autopsy will be conducted later today.

"Those results will be released when available," Coronato said. "The investigation to this point indicates that his fatal injuries were self-inflicted. “In lieu of this unspeakable event, I ask the public and media to respect the family’s privacy.”
