Interview Tip of the Week
According to Princeton University’s Career Services, first-round interviews typically last 30 to 45 minutes. The focus of first-round interviews is generally on the interviewee’s motivations, goals, experiences, and skills. Princeton broke down the first-round interview like so: the first two to three minutes of an interview includes an introduction and small talk while the next 15 to 20 minutes is dedicated to questions for you. The last five to 10 minutes of the interview will give you time to ask the interviewer questions.
It is not only important to ask the interviewer questions for your own informational purposes but to show your interest and engage in conversation as well.
Boston College Career Center offers three tips to asking interviewers questions:
1. Do not ask questions just to impress the interviewer. Only ask questions you want the answer to.
2. Do not ask questions if the answers are provided on the company’s website or in the job description. Ask questions that show the extent of your research and interest.
3. Wait until a job offer to ask about salary, benefits, or other perks.
