Dachshund Badly Burned By Caustic Chemicals, Boiling Water Or Hot Oil, Popcorn Park Says

Donations are needed to help treat the dog, who was surrendered to shelter this week.

Warning: Graphic Photos

Employees at the Associated Humane Societies Popcorn Park Zoo were horrified when a seven-year-old named dachshund Snoopy was brought into the shelter, covered with some kind of burns.

The photos of Snoopy show a pup with deep open wounds on his back, sides and tail. The first photo you see is the easiest to look at, and that's not saying much. How someone could hurt an innocent animal like this?

"That's the question that is on the minds of all of us at Associated Humane/Popcorn Park," said a post on the shelter's Facebook page. "So many questions need answering, but we're afraid that we'll never know exactly what happened to this poor boy. The one thing that we're absolutely sure of is that Snoopy's life changed for the better the moment he walked through our doors."

Snoopy's owner brought the dog in, supposedly very distraught over his condition, but very unclear about what had happened to him.

Snoopy has deep, open wounds all over his back, and some on his sides and tail. Apparently some uninvited person may have hurt the dog, according to the post.

"The case is under investigation, but regardless of how it happened, the important thing is that he get medical treatment and relief from the horrid pain that he has been enduring for what appears to be a very long time," the post states.

The owner signed Snoopy over to Popcorn Park. Snoopy was sedated and the shelter veterinarian examined the dog's wounds.

She determined that the wounds were from either caustic chemicals, boiling water or hot oil thrown on the dog.

"The wounds are not bites from another animal, but are deep flesh wounds that could only be caused by serious burns or chemicals," the post states.

Snoopy's wounds were cleaned with surgical wash and then laser therapy was administered, to begin healing the wounds. He is on pain medication and a variety of medications to treat his infections. Laser therapy will be given several times a week to help heal his wounds.

The shelter needs donations for Snoopy's medical costs through the Res-Q-Fund.

"Snoopy has a long, tough road to recovery ahead of him," the post states. "We will do everything in our power to keep him as comfortable as possible as he heals, but hope that you will all keep our new friend Snoopy in your thoughts and prayers."
