Man Fleeing Cops Prompts School Lockdown Tuesday In Lawrence: Police

There was no direct threat to students or staff, police said.

LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, NJ — A man fleeing police on Tuesday caused the schools to lockdown in the township, Lawrence Police said.

On Tuesday, around 10:20 a.m., a pedestrian fled from police after being stopped for a traffic violation near Princeton Pike and Rydal Drive.

An officer initiated the stop when the person, described as a Black male in his early 20s with medium-length black dreadlocks, refused to provide identification before fleeing southbound toward Lawrence High School through the practice football field into Veteran's Park, police said.

Officers established a perimeter and conducted a search but were unable to locate the man, who was wearing a black baseball cap, black t-shirt, white pants, and sneakers at the time of the incident.

Investigation has since positively identified the individual, who has an outstanding arrest warrant. Additional charges related to this incident are pending. The suspect's identity is being withheld as the investigation continues.

Lawrence Township Public Schools implemented shelter-in-place protocols as a precautionary measure due to the proximity of several schools. Authorities emphasize there was no direct threat to students or staff.
