Lawrence Detectives Busy Investigating New Burglaries

Five burglaries and one attempted burglary took place in Lawrence Township between Nov. 10 and Nov. 15. Three of the crimes occurred on the same street.

Five burglaries and one attempted burglary that took place between last Thursday (Nov. 10) and Tuesday (Nov. 15) are under investigation by Lawrence Township detectives, police spokesman Lt. Charles Edgar confirmed.

Three of the crimes, including the attempted burglary, occurred at homes on Hawk Road, located off Yorkshire Village Road in the development behind the Mercer Mall shopping center.

The other break–ins took place at homes on Glenn Avenue and Putnam Avenue and at the Howard Johnson motel on Brunswick Pike (Route 1).

Hawk Road

It was 7:59 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10, when a 43–year–old resident of Hawk Road called police to report that after returning home he realized numerous items were out of place in the residence and that several items were missing, Edgar said.

Edgar said a rear window was found to have been forced open and over $1,000 worth of property stolen, including a wristwatch, a Nintendo video game system and accessories, and other small electronics. He said the resident told police the break–in probably took place sometime between about 5 and 6:30 p.m. that day.

At about 8:20 p.m., while they were investigating that burglary, police discovered that someone – likely the same person – had tried to pry open one of the windows of the house next–door, Edgar said. But he said the burglar never got inside and a 31–year–old resident of that home reported that nothing was missing.

He said the attempted break–in is believed to have taken place during the same time period as the first crime.

Then at 9:17 p.m., a 31–year–old resident of another home on Hawk Road, just a few doors from the other two houses, approached police officers who were still in the area to report that he too had been the victim of a burglary, Edgar said.

That resident told police after he arrived home he found that a rear window had been pried open and that about $800 worth of small electronics – including a camera and computer equipment – had been stolen sometime between 8:30 that morning and 7:45 p.m., while the house was unoccupied.

Glenn Avenue

At 7:29 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, an 82–year–old resident of Glenn Avenue called police to report that jewelry and some prescription medication had been stolen from her home, Edgar said. An estimate of the value of the stolen jewelry was not available.

He said police are still investigating exactly how the burglar got inside the house, but a rear window is suspected. He said the break–in took place sometime on Nov. 10 or early on Nov. 11.

Putnam Avenue

At 2:47 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13, a 64–year–old resident of Putnam Avenue called police after she discovered that a basement window had been forced open and that more than $7,000 worth of jewelry and cash had been stolen from her bedroom, Edgar said.

He said the woman’s suspicions were aroused when she returned home and found a light on that had been off when she left the house that morning. He said the break–in is believed to have occurred between 11 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. that day

Howard Johnson Motor Lodge

On Tuesday, Nov. 15, management at the Howard Johnson Motor Lodge in the 2900 block of Brunswick Pike called police at 4:37 p.m. to report that during the previous evening someone broke into a shed on the motel’s property and took about $4,800 worth of equipment, including a power washer and a backpack leaf blower, according to Edgar.
