D'Ascoli Previews New Sprites

Zeke D'Ascoli, a rising seventh-grader, recently visited the Gamestar Mechanic headquarters in New York City. The district subscribes to the GSM website as a part of its STEM initiative for Grades 4-6. Students learn fundamentals of video game creation that integrates problem solving, higher order thinking, engineering, and creativity. Lawrence Intermediate School introduces this to fourth-graders and gives them a login and password, thus allowing them to access it from home. They can critique other students' games and add suggestions in the form of blog comments.

Zeke is an avid GSM player/blogger. After contacting the makers of GSM with some of his ideas and suggestions, they agreed to have Zeke and his family visit their operation.

Zeke related, "They were extremely open and were welcoming to visitors such as myself. First, I was introduced to the staff. I met most of the GSM team...After a thorough introduction and brief job description, I went to see some new sprites that they were working on. Sprites are what GSM is about, a story for each character. After I saw the upcoming sprites, I took a look at a new game platform that they were developing. You can take a sneak peak of it at the E-Line Media web-page. I play-tested that for a while and then my visit had come to an end. I said our goodbyes and left, but not without graciously thanking them for the visit. The most enthralling part of the visit was meeting the team who had made such an awesome gaming platform."

Due to its popularity, a Gamestar Mechanic Club was started at LIS.
