Lawrence Township Honored by Sustainable Jersey

For the third year in a row, Lawrence Township last week was awarded Bronze-level certification by Sustainable Jersey.

Lawrence Township last week was awarded Sustainable Jersey’s Bronze certification for the third year in a row.

The honor is the result of 250 points worth of sustainable actions accomplished by the Lawrence Green Team and town partners including Sustainable Lawrence, the , , other town committees and hundreds of residents.

“Lawrence community groups and residents are to be commended for all the great projects and events that happened this year to make this benchmark possible, from a rain garden workshop to our , to , to a , to an energy audit of all township buildings,” township Councilwoman Pam Mount said in a news release.

“Lawrence calculated the community’s carbon footprint, signed a sustainable land use pledge, passed our complete streets ordinance and began the program to create roads that are safe for walkers and bikers, as well as cars. We also created a community garden, a natural resources inventory, an environmental assessment ordinance, a tree protection ordinance, a forestry plan, and protected animals at our nature center, and all of our public schools now have solar roofs,” Mount said in the release.

Lawrence is one of 96 towns in the state to be awarded Sustainable Jersey certification. Over 350 towns are registered with Sustainable Jersey.

Councilman Michael Powers and Township Engineer Jim Parvesse accepted the award on behalf of Lawrence Township during a luncheon on Nov. 15 at the League of Municipalities convention in Atlantic City. 

Mount, who also serves as chair of the Sustainable Jersey board, moderated the luncheon.
