Latino Parent Night Scheduled for LHS Parents

A Latino Parent Night outreach is scheduled for Dec. 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Lawrence High School Commons. Jennifer Minaya Osemwegie, Spanish teacher and Academy of Business and International Studies leader, is coordinating the informational event (back-to-school type) for ninth- and 10th-grade parents and a college planning/workshop for 11th- and 12th-grade parents. The latter will include a panel of Spanish-speaking representatives from local institutions.

District Hosts Special Presentation for Parents: How to Have Sensitive Conversation with Your Child

Dr. Juanita Brooks, clinical director of PEI Kids in Lawrence, spoke to a group of roughly 60 parents on Nov. 28 in the Lawrence High School library. Dr. Brooks has a PhD from Rutgers and is a licensed social worker. She’s certified in the Advanced Studies in Child Maltreatment with a specialization in Child Sexual Abuse. She’s also certified to treat juvenile sex offenders and has over 15 years experience working with child victims. Erin Servillo, interim director of student services, arranged for Dr. Brooks to come and address our parents in light of media reports of recent happenings throughout our region. Ewing, Princeton and West Windsor-Plainsboro districts also extended the invitation to their parents. Sophomore Academy Sponsors Career Day

The morning of Nov. 22 found all Sophomore Career Academy students participating in a Career Day, organized by teacher and academy leader Stefanie Tziarri. The event program lists the panelists and their backgrounds. Retired district Superintendent Phil Meara was a panelist and related information about a career in education.

 

Operation Smile Sends Students on Global Missions

Nicole Tunnard, Leanna Glass, Sara Beth Sullivan and Caoimhe O’Sullivan Roche, members of the Lawrence High School Operation Smile Club, went to Beijing, China, for Operation Smile’s mission training workshop and International Student Cultural Exchange Conference last summer. At this training session, they learned about their role as educators for the missions to which they would be assigned and what they would teach the children during their mission experience. Upon completion of the training workshop, the girls were assigned missions to four different countries during the 2011-2012 school year.

Nicole Tunnard traveled to Fengkai, China, from Nov. 8-16; Leanna Glass went to Guwahati, India, from Nov. 11-21; Sara Beth Sullivan is in Ghana from Dec. 1-10; and Caoimhe O’Sullivan Roche will be going to Nicaragua in February 2012. Cheryl Eng, Lawrence High School art teacher, advises the Operation Smile program.

 

Career Academy Students View “De Novo”

On Wednesday, Nov. 23, all Upper School students in the Arts and Humanities, Business and International Studies, and Science and Technology Career Academies saw a play in the Lawrence High School auditorium. Entitled “De Novo,” the true story is a documentary about an undocumented minor seeking asylum from U.S. immigration custody. Click here for more information.

 

LHS Career Academies Parents’ Night Out Cancelled

The Parents Night Out that the Lawrence High Career Academies were scheduled to host on Dec. 9 has been cancelled.

 

Santa is Coming to Lawrence High School

Bring your children to the Lawrence High Cafeteria on Dec. 17 and they can enjoy a pancake breakfast with Santa. The event is sponsored by the LHS chapter of the Lindsey Meyer Teen Institute. See the flyer for details.
