Published Author Visits Eldridge Park Elementary School

Kaia Dyckman, Eldridge Park Elementary School student, and school librarian Michele Immordino invited Kaia's mother, Ame Dyckman, to speak to second- and third-graders about her love for writing, her new book, and becoming a published author. The visit tied into Mrs. Immordino's library lessons.

Ms. Dyckman's book “Boy and Bot” was recently by published by Random House, with illustrations by Dan Yaccarino, an acclaimed author and illustrator himself. “Boy and Bot” is a charming story about the friendship that sparks between a boy and a robot. Their adventures help them to realize that despite their similarities and differences, they can still remain good friends.

Ms. Dyckman also signed books purchased by the students and distributed “Boy and Bot” wristbands to the whole school. The book is available for purchase at your favorite bookseller.

Lawrence High School Students “Get Real”

In May Lawrence High School students in business education classes attended a "Reality Fair" in the LHS library. Hopewell and Ewing students also participated in the program at LHS, made possible, at no charge, by New Jersey Credit Unions. The fair gave hands-on experience in which students, after identifying their career choice and starting salaries, were provided a budget sheet requiring them to live within their monthly salary while paying for basics such as housing, utilities, transportation, clothing, and food. Of course, there were many temptations for additional spending and students needed to learn to balance their wants and needs to live on their own. After students visited all the booths, they balanced their budget and then sat down with a financial counselor to review their standing (see photo in the media box above). This was a unique opportunity for each student to experience some of the financial challenges they will face when they start life on their own.
