Mercer Sheriff Sets Date For Unused Prescription Drugs Collection

The aim is to help residents rid their medicine cabinets of outdated and easily abused opioids.

MERCER COUNTY, NJ — Mark your spring calendars. Mercer County Sheriff Jack Kemler recently announced that his office will offer the opportunity to dispose of unused and expired prescription drugs during the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 26.

The aim is to help residents rid their medicine cabinets of outdated and easily abused opioid painkillers and other unneeded prescription medications.

Mercer residents can quickly drive up and drop off any unused and expired prescription pills, with no questions asked, at the parking lot across from the Mercer County Administration Building, located at 640 South Broad Street in Trenton, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is both a nationwide and regional effort aimed at providing a safe, convenient, and responsible method for disposing of dangerous, unneeded, and outdated prescription pills from your household.

"Removing unused and expired medications from your home can help prevent accidental overdose, misuse, and addiction," Kemler said.

Proper disposal of old medications also reduces environmental risks, as medicines flushed down the drains could eventually enter local drinking water supplies.

"Make it a point to round up your unused and expired prescriptions and help make our local communities safer and healthier," Kemler said.

The disposal event will collect vape pens and other e-cigarette devices only after the batteries are removed. The drug disposal event cannot accept syringes, sharp instruments, liquid medications, or solutions.

The Mercer County Sheriff's Office, along with other law enforcement agencies in the region, conducts this program in collaboration with the Mercer County Prosecutor's Office. For more information, contact the Sheriff's Office Programs Section at 609-278-7159.
