New Carnegie Road Bridge Now Open [VIDEO]
The new $1.3 million bridge carries Carnegie Road over the Assunpink Creek to connect Lawrence Township with Hamilton. Commuters from Route 1 use the road to get to the Hamilton train station.

The Mercer County Department of Transportation and Infrastructure and Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes today [Friday, Nov. 18] reopened the bridge carrying Carnegie Road over Assunpink Creek in Hamilton and Lawrence Townships where the road crosses the Assunpink Creek.Â
“This is an important route for commuters getting from Route 1 to the Hamilton Train Station, and we know people will be thrilled to have this bridge and roadway reopened,” Hughes said.

Officially known as Bridge #6-540.4 on Carnegie Road, the bridge is located 0.5 miles south of the intersection U.S. Route 1 and Carnegie Road.
The original bridge was 74 feet long, single span, riveted plate through girder with floor beams and stringers built in 1961 and was deemed "structurally deficient," with a Sufficiency Rating of 34.4 out of 100.Â

The new structure supports two 12-foot wide travel lanes, two 4-foot wide shoulders, and a 6-foot wide concrete sidewalk on the east side of the bridge. The overall length of the new structure is approximately 70 feet. The new bridge consists of pre-stressed concrete beams on driven steel pile supporting cast-in-place reinforced concrete abutments and wingwalls.Â
The Mercer County Board of Chosen Freeholders approved the award of bid to the Marbro Inc. on June 7, 2011. The cost of the project was $1,317,117.00 and it was funded through New Jersey Department of Transportation Local Aid funds.
