Ticket Issued in One Wreck, None Given in Other Crash

Lawrence Township police have finished investigating two traffic accidents that took place last weekend. Police said two cars collided after one made a U-turn in front of the other, while a "medical emergency" caused another driver to hit a building.

Lawrence Township police have concluded their investigations into two traffic accidents that took place last weekend which, at first glance, appeared to involve significant injuries but which ultimately turned out to be far less serious.

The first accident occurred about 9:50 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, when a car driven by a 70-year-old township woman hit the side of Building 12 of the Eggerts Crossing Village apartment complex in the 100 block of Johnson Avenue.

Lt. Mark Ubry said the woman lost control of her car when she suffered a temporary “medical emergency” as she was trying to park her car. The car hit the apartment building, damaging the brick wall.

The woman, who was expected to make a full recovery, was transported by ambulance to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton, Ubry said.

He said a township building inspector, meanwhile, determined that the damage to the building was mostly cosmetic and that no evacuations were necessary.

Because a medical issue was the cause of the crash, the woman did not receive any tickets, Ubry said.

The second accident occurred about 1:55 p.m. Sunday, May 20, when Frederick Debrito, a 58-year-old Lawrence Township resident, allegedly tried to make a U-turn on Lawrenceville-Pennington Road near Merion Place, Ubry said.

Debrito had been going westbound on Lawrenceville-Pennington Road. In making the U-turn, Ubry said, Debrito’s car cut directly across the path of another car being driven west on Lawrenceville-Pennington Road by Christopher Huber, 49, also from Lawrence Township.

Ubry said the front of Huber’s car struck the driver’s side of Debrito’s car. Debrito was trapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated by township volunteer firefighters using hydraulic rescue tools.

Debrito was also taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center by ambulance, Ubry said, noting that Debrito’s injuries included a general complaint of pain. He said the other driver, Huber, was not injured.

Ubry said Officer Ronald Buchanan investigated the crash and issued Debrito a ticket for careless driving.
